vacation rentals at copala at quivira

Los Cabos is in full bloom; we have new developments coming to town, new resorts, new restaurants, new shops opening and new international events noted down in our agendas.  With Baja’s natural beauty, the natural resources like fishing and desert adventures, as well as world’s top golf courses and worldwide acclaimed chefs, it’s easy to know why Los Cabos is one of the favorite destinations of not only Hollywood’s celebrities, but any traveler, lover of ocean and Mexico in general.

Recently Quivira Los Cabos, from Pueblo Bonito Group, presented its new real estate project Copala, a new luxury community with an important luxury focus in mind.  The inauguration of this residential community was celebrated with a delightful cocktail event  themed “Welcome to the Good Life”, showcasing the first phase of the development with 20 houses and the new clubhouse.  The complete luxury complex will have 320 properties carefully designed to complement the breathtaking landscapes of the Pacific Ocean side.

We were invited to the presentation cocktail where we were welcomed at the main entrance of Copala to start a special tour in the model condo, where we could easily admire the fascinating views of the complex to the Pacific Ocean, and the amazing Jack Nicklaus signature golf course Quivira. To put it simply, the amazing location of this development and the amenities will make it one of our guests’ favorite place to stay when in Los Cabos!

We enjoyed great amenities during the presentation.  All of them reflected the theme of the “The Good Life Los Cabos” with a holistic philosophy that integrates the needs of our body, mind and soul through spaces and services that will nourish guests and residents.

The Good Life theme contains 5 clubs in Quivira which all residents have access to enjoy; the Organic Garden At Quivira, PetClub At Quivira, Art Gallery At Quivira, Wine Club At Quivira, and Yacht Club At Quivira.

sierra de la laguna hiking & camping tour

Looking for your next adventure in Baja California Sur?  In this blog post, we’ll take you on one of the best tours designated for real explorers. Probably one of the most hidden and preserved treasures of Los Cabos area is Sierra de la Laguna mountain. It is also known as an “ecological paradise” because of its exceptional biodiversity and the importance as a natural source of water for the entire region of Baja California Sur.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
Driving the highway between Los Cabos and La Paz or through the East Cape you can easily admire a high mountain range up north.  This is the Sierra de la Laguna.  Since 1994, it had been designated as a Natural Protected Area by UNESCO under the name of The Biosphere Reserve of Sierra de la Laguna, because of its great importance for the region and all the endemic nature that we can find there.  To get a better picture, imagine this place as a green island in the middle of the desert, an authentic oasis with a maximum altitude of 6,857 ft ASL (2,090 meters) with 227, 832 hectares under protection.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
This hidden paradise invites us to discover the wonders of mother nature, and live an authentic experience of adventurers. Even though this is a protected area, we can enjoy many eco-friendly activities, such a mountain biking, trekking, and camping.  You can enjoy all these activities in the excursions and expedition tours to the Sierra de la Laguna, provided that you follow all the indications and rules of the area. Let yourself surrounded by nature and nothing else, enjoy one night under a thousand stars and be dazzled by the shine of the moon.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
The Journey to the Sierra de La Laguna mountain
To start the journey from Cabo San Lucas, you will find a dirt road exit near Todos Santos; this road will lead you to the start point of Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. Because this is a Protected Area, there are some rules you are obliged to follow. For a minimal fee, you will get a special bracelet as a permit to access this protected areas.  Once you begin your journey, you will start walking through the dirt trails, and as you go all the way to the top, you can easily observe the amazing colors of nature at its best and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean coasts.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
The pathway can be demanding and exhausting for some – we didi the tour in 8 hours with 3 stops. It all depends on your condition and your exercise habits, but don’t worry; the tour guides will adjust the tour to your group’s habits, wants and experiences. We can assure you that everyone will enjoy the trip, admire this rarely seen side of Baja, and feel the connection with nature.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
Along the way to the top, you will find three resting spots; the first is called “El Aguaje.”  This spot is located next to a little river, where you can hear the water running, and observe a little oasis.  Coming more to the top, you find the second break “La Ventana”; an open area where you can rest and recover your energies.  After this point, the views and vegetation will change completely because you’ll be almost at the top of the mountain range.  The trees get taller than on the lower heights and the vegetation is more like a forest type.

sierra de la laguna hiking and camping trip
The last resting spot is called “Zona de Nucleo.”  Here you are welcomed to the top of the mountain range, where the pathway becomes easier and full of vegetation, big trees and of course the views keep getting better.  We were stunned by the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, the sun shining on its waves and the fine lines of the beaches that mark the end of the Baja.  Following the path, you can easily find the camping areas.  Starry night gets an entirely new dimension at Sierra de La Laguna, and the experience of hiking, camping and exploring Sierra de la Laguna is an absolutely fascinating experience from the start until your return.

Special recommendations:
– Make sure to do this trip with an experienced guide. Our Luxury Villa Collections team will make sure your guides are well prepared and will be able to guide you safely throughout the trip.
– Carry all you may need to make your camping trip the best, pack enough water, food, personal items and a safety kit.
– It is important to have a pair of special hiking shoes and hiking sticks to make the trekking easier.
– You may be checked by authorities, just to make sure you don’t carry things that can contaminate the environment.
– It is highly recommended to plan for at least a 2-3 days long trip, so you can recover energies and have plenty of time to explore the surrounding areas.
– Pack special camping items and winter clothes, as it can get cold on the top of the mountain.
– Dare to live this amazing experience and one of the most adventurous activities in Baja Sur!

Easter time in Mexico can be a little bit different from what you are used to. Mexicans have their special traditions for this holiday season (you can read about them in our article here). So, what to do during your Easter Vacation in Cabo? Let’s begin:

1. Egg hunt at the beach

easter time-cabo

Keeping traditions is always important. The egg hunt activity is so much fun for the kids, but how about giving it a more exciting twist and take advantage of the beautiful beaches in Cabo? Choose your favorite beach and start this new tradition, have some Easter fun in the sun playing along in the sand with the gentle waves of the Sea of Cortez as a background. Just don’t forget to bring a sunscreen and a hat.

2. Sunset cruise

Enjoy the best of the Sea of Cortez on a family cruise tour in the afternoon. The fresh breeze and ocean winds will get you in a good mood. From our experience, an afternoon on the boat, enjoying Cabo from the sea, is unique for everyone. The chance to enjoy a sunset view floating on the water is a natural spectacle that we all love to enjoy. There’re several choices of companies to choose from the ocean tours, and we’ll be glad to help choose the perfect one for you, depending on whether you want to enjoy a family trip or a fun afternoon with friends.

7. Mexican cooking class for the family in your villa

Whale Watching in Baja

Baja Peninsula is a paradise on Earth, and the giants of the marine world agree with us.  Our yearly visitors from Alaska are the Humpback and Grey Whales.  They have traveled for thousands of years to the coast of Baja California Sur to initiate and complete their reproductive cycle.

The whale migration journey is the longest mammal migration on Earth; they travel more than 16,000 kilometers from the coast of Alaska and Canada down to the warm waters of Baja’s Pacific lagoons.  They begin their journey through winter, from early December until April.  These are the months when we have the opportunity to interact with them, and they amaze us with this natural and unique spectacle.

Baja California Sur knows the importance of the reproduction and safety of the whales; that’s why it has its own “Whale Sanctuaries”, protected natural areas to ensure the security of these mammals.  Ojo de Liebre Lagoon is the biggest Whale Sanctuary in Baja, located in the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage.  This sanctuary is the most important site for the reproduction and wintering of the grey and blue whales.  The Ojo de Liebre lagoon is located on the Pacific coast, and it has an area of 227, 994 hectares.

Another important sanctuary is the San Ignacio Lagoon with an area of 142, 956 hectares located near to Ojo de Liebre Lagoon on the Pacific coast too.  Magdalena Bay on the Pacific coast is another special place where grey whales give birth to their babies, where they mate and feed and play.  You can take a small boat from Adolfo Mateos Port or San Carlos Port to get into the bay and enjoy the peaceful whales and their newborn babies.  The peace that you feel here is amazing, the bay is beautiful and quiet with only a few boats and mindful fishermen and whale guides, where whales can enjoy pure peace.

All the whale sanctuaries mentioned above are located 6 hours or more from Cabo San Lucas, so your whale watching trip to those lagoons would take at least two full days.  If you can’t take that much time away off of your Los Cabos vacation, don’t worry – you can see the whales in Los Cabos as well!  In Los Cabos, we have tour experts and providers that every year welcome visitors who come to live this unforgettable experience.  Here you can see these playful mammals jumping into the sea enjoying the warm waters of Baja.

If you’d like to see the whales in their natural sanctuary, in the serene lagoons of the Pacific Coast, please email us at concierge@lvc.com, and we will be happy to organize a tour for you.  The whale watching season in Baja lasts from December until the end of March.

Whale watching is one of a kind experience that will leave you unforgettable memories, the peace of these gentle mammals and their greatness is incredible.  Whale season is one of our favorite seasons in Baja; we hope you can experience it to its fullest.

Drive by Truckers feat Peter Buck

If you are a real Baja lover, and you know Los Cabos well, you can imagine why we are so excited by the Todos Santos Music Festival 2016 (January 14-16 and January 20-23). The magical town of Todos Santos, located a few minutes from Cabo San Lucas, is considered a refuge for artists and painters and home of the legendary Hotel California, this charming town is ready to welcome us next week!

Starting in 2012, the Todos Santos Music Festival, created by Peter Buck, lead guitarist of R.E.M., everything began with Peter inviting some friends to play, choosing this place for the intimacy, the charm, and the historical background. Along with the Hotel California, they have added music to the list of cultural events in town, bringing musicians together to help make a difference in the community of Todos Santos and supporting local charities, like The Palapa Society A.C.

“The Todos Santos Music Festival has grown from a few friends playing for a few people into an incredible event featuring well-known bands and bigger crowds, without losing the intimacy or impromptu spirit,” says Peter Buck.

Year by year the festival gets better and better, adding more days, more bands and more fun! On its 5th Annual Edition, Peter Buck and the Todos Santos Music Festival have some surprises for us.  An incredible line-up starting with the grand announcement of the alternative band Death Cab for Cutie, first time playing in Mexico.  Then we’ll see singer and songwriter Jeff Tweedy; and returning last year’s incredible performances by the alternative country band Old 97’s, Drive-By Truckers, The Jayhawks, The Autumn Defense. Grammy Award-winning La Santa Cecilia will be there as well, as well as the Mexican alternative band Torreblanca and the first time festival artists Tigria.  Besides all the mentioned artists, we will also be enjoying performances by local musicians.

“The opportunity to bring artists together to support The Palapa Society’s educational mission, along with other worthy local charities, is extremely gratifying for all of us, I’m looking forward to the festival’s 5th installment,” said Peter Buck.

The restaurant serves ceviche bar, small plates for sharing, grilled entrees and an impressive selection of signature cocktails and Latin wines. A common location for winter whale sightings, the restaurant’s patio boasts an artfully designed whale fountain for guests to enjoy while taking in the ocean views.

The Office: a good place to enjoy the best of Mexican and regional cuisines, like fresh seafood dishes and the taste of American Black Angus steaks. Located on El Medano beach, this is one of the best spots to enjoy the fireworks that marks the start of the New Year!

templo cabo
Templo Restaurant: if you prefer a quieter and cozy atmosphere, this pleasant place located in Cabo San Lucas downtown is the perfect option for you.  Their fusion cuisine will leave you speechless; for example, their Special Holiday Menu has a slow cooked New York steak or a Black Cod Confit as the main course.

After a delicious dinner, it’s time for a great party!  The Cape Hotel will have a fantastic line up for the night, performing Io Echo, Josh Madden, Ana Calderon, Dj Momjeans and Samantha Ronson.  They promise an incredible party to dance the night away and step into the new year the best way possible.

For all the lovers of farm to table cuisine, don’t miss Flora Farm’s Kitchen Specials; try New Year Day Brunch – it’s classic.  Newly opened Acre Restaurant, an organic farm, and farm-to-table restaurant near Flora Farms is a place you need to try as well.  We’ve tasted their 7-course tasting menu, and it was fantastic. We were impressed with the architecture and the entire site as well, as well as with reasonable prices.

Posada at Flora Farm’s

Posadas are an important part of Mexican Christmas celebrations.  The word posada means “inn” or “shelter” in Spanish, and this tradition re-enacts Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.  Posadas are held in Mexico on each of the nine nights leading up to Christmas, from December 16 to 24th.  We held Luxury Villa Collections’ posada early this year, we celebrated the year that is passing and cheered to a great new 2016 at Flora Farm‘s in San Jose del Cabo.

Here are just some photos from our celebration.

We wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy new year full of travels and adventures.

Melissa Verdugo and your friends in Cabo San Lucas,
@ Luxury Villa Collections
